Over here in the UK one the first side-effects listed are nausea and gastro-instestinal upsets I was unlucky I still got some of the effects with the modified release version but we found it was an interaction with something I take __________________ Cloudedbrains aka Donna

I am on insulin basically because of the nausea and horrible stomach pain from metformin! I have never known of anyone who DIDN'T have some degree of stomach ailment from it, at lease initially.
I've tried it a few times, and the last time, my whole family would lie on my bed with me while I rolled around and cried from the stomach pain.
In fact, I have asked in the last few days on another part of this site if anyone had any advice as I would like to try it AGAIN--I am on byetta and would really like to be on one of the drugs for which it is approved to work in concert with.
Thanks for the tips about yogurt, etc. If doc will agree, I will begin that asap.

I just called the Kaiser pharmacy. They don't offer the extended release Metformin to patients. The pharmacist said, "You are doing everything right to lessen the nausea." Then, I told the pharmacist that the diabetes doc had told me that Metformin doesn't cause nausea and that I would surely be written up in the medical journals.
I thought the pharmacist would die laughing. She said that some people do experience nausea with Metformin.
Kathy, you and are are lucky enough to be the "few". --------------------------------------------------- Hmmm no ER metformin.well i'm not sure why the pharmacist told you that .my metformin bottle has Metformin 500MG ER i believe the ER stands for Extended Release.so ya might want to ask another |

Hi Russ, and welcome to our dearjanis family. I am T2 for 20+ years and now on insulin only. I guess I was one of the lucky ones years ago when I was on metformin. I don't remember having any problems with it. But I have heard of others, not just on this board, having problems with it. Are you T1 or 2 and how to you manage your diabetes? We have a lot of very nice people here who give excellent advise, comments and even get a little silly at times. So, anyway, welcome and feel free to join in. Read you later -

Hi Sherrie, Russ and anyone with Metformin side effects, I have proof that Metformin causes nausea. My 30 -year old daughter, Karen, who is mentally challenged, has epilepsy and is like a 2 year-old mentally. She was having lows with her T2d meds...Glipizide. the doctor recommended Metformin because she wouldn't have lows. After the second dose, we were up all night with her and the dry heaves. She had no idea what had changed because she has no comprehension of what meds she takes or why. Although the doc said we did right by her by going back to the Glipizide, but he too, resisted that it was side effect. He still wanted her on them....no way!!!!
Here's the good news. She had lost 40 lbs and I count her carbs. She was able to go off T2d meds altogether on July 16, 2007. Her meter average currently is 10 points lower than when she was on the meds.
As Kim said, why doctors won't believe this is beyond me.

Lou, that must have been so hard for you and for Karen to be sick all night. I have trouble understanding why doctors don't want to believe some of us do not respond well to Metformin. I have a great idea......why not challenge the doctor to take Metformin his or her own self? I wonder if their position would change then? Karen is a lucky young woman to have you for her mother. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you, Kathy. Bob and I devote our life to Karen. He's in the other room right now talking with her about magazine ads. She is pointing at all of the goodies like m&m's. I know she could have a few, but Mom & Dad can't stop at a few...so no more in the house!!

Hi All! I guess I am one of the lucky few. I don't get naucious(sp?) with metformin unless I have'nt had enough to eat. I also take it with byetta. As soon as I eat something like a string cheese stick then the sicky feeling goes away!Good luck everyone. I wished I could pop in more often but work calls. This must be something to do with american dr's as here in UK its well known about the side-effects and alot of dr's want people on the modified release one but even still when I was on metformin again before being admitted with my brittle asthma the other month it was found to be reacting to meds I take for the brittle asthma and combining a few that have the same effect yet all being modified release for me just meant "h*ll on earth" for stomach issues, if it was one or the other then maybe it would work for me but my meds for keeping me breathing won and the metformin MR got binned for me but I take insulin anyway and may be going onto pioglitazone (depends on endo when get the appt !! __________________ Cloudedbrains aka Donna
