Reply with quote | #16 | Janis, isn't the Animas pump the one that allows very small changes in basal and bolus so that itr is especially appropriate for very young kids? I have a friend who is considering a pump for her 2 and 1/2 year old and she is about to back out because she wants to be able to make very small changes in his insulin basals and boluses. Her child is doing very well on MDI and she is weighing her options.

If we have more codes like this then we need to call Animas, but they will not replace the pump unless we have had 3 in a month. Now if the motor did not respond, does that only happen during rewind? Will the pump alert me each time the motor decides not to work?
Hi Jellybeans, Here is the response that I got from my contact at Animas: "The pump will alarm anytime there is a mechanical problem. If the battery has not been changed in more than a month, that may help with the issue. A single occurrence may not indicate a persistent problem, but it should certainly be reported, and recommendations by the Pump Support team would be the best direction to follow" She also encourages everyone who uses a pump to contact their pump companies with these types of concerns. The pump companies know the mechanical workings of their pumps and can respond to these types of questions. Janis __________________ Janis Roszler, RD, CDE, LD/N |

Hi Richard, Yes, the Animas pump enables a child to have a basal rate as low as 0.025 units/hour and a bolus as small as 0.05u. Janis __________________ Janis Roszler, RD, CDE, LD/N |

Reply with quote | #20 | Janis thank you for the reply. I am doing better, my #s are better than they were, but still higher than I feel they should be. I see my Endo in September, but I am wondering if I shouldn't email him my logbook and see if he feels I should make some changes in my basals or boluses? I hate to see what my A1C is this time. It seems like I just get my BS#s where they should and then they gradually start to climb again. Especially my morning fasting #s. Lately I am having to do a correction bolus every morning before breakfast. And My 14 day average has been 150 the last couple of days. So you see why I am getting frustrated.
Thanks for listening.

Reply with quote | #21 | Hi Terry Lee, If you have to take a correction bolus before breakfast, your basal rate definitely needs an adjustment! See if your doc will advise you if you send in your records. You can share your basal test results with him - they will help him give you a speedy response. Don't worry about your A1C. It takes time to get on track, so don't take it too seriously - you're on the right track and will do MUCH better next time. Janis __________________ Janis Roszler, RD, CDE, LD/N |

Hi Janis! Sorry was tired from doing things around the house, major cleaning while Chase is gone, and didn't get to test....I am going try tonight though. We may have covered this.....I will get up early and test at 97, lay back down a bit and test for breakfast and it is 123! Because??? Tried calling my Endo three times yesterday and kept saying "circuits are busy, pleas call back at a later time"...don't know why! Will try again today, and if not, will call my pump trainer then. My husband keeps telling me to go ahead and lower the numbers, since I used to...T3 when HE wants to be.... "once a month now and then", but no problem for awhile with that, and said I am afraid I will shoot it to low. Reply with quote | #23 | Hi Paula, Adjusting the pump is not the same as adjusting injections. First you need to see a pattern. Are you always high in the morning or just once in a while? You don't change your basal if it is just a once-in-a-while problem. Then you need to see what time frame to change. Are you going high just before you wake up or while you are asleep? You need to test throughout the night, as I posted, in order to check your nighttime basal. If you are running high, you increase your basal for that time slot by 0.1 unit. Call your pump trainer and review what you want to do before you do it. He or she will be able to guide you further. Sorry about your doctor. Grrr.... I only use them in the stomach area, including the side, and have never had a problem...well once I didn't take the tube off the needle! I purchased the "clip on" /carry on bag for travaeling, a couple weeks ago and I truly love it due to the fact getting in and out of the car and the clip sliding on me. It is VERY SECURE TOO! I know Janis will get a response for her. Good luck! CLINK! - Paula
Hi Paula, Sorry I didn't see this sooner. I totally missed it!! Sounds like you and Julia use the same sets. Julia used to get the pink ones, but since we switched delivery companies she now gets the right size and length, but doesn't have a choice in color. It differs monthly. She has very little fat on her. I am sure enough, but I think that since she started growing she has slimed down so much that it is causing the kinks. The ends of the set are bent after each occlusion alarm. I think the tip is hitting her stomach muscles. We haven't had good luck with any of the other sites, and I am not to sure about the arm, neither is she, lol.
It's gotta hurt to not take the tip off the needle, did it try to go in? We once had one that wouldn't release, after further inspection we found out that a lot of the adhesive had left and went onto the backing. That was tough as we had tried to insert it 3 times before figuring it out. Scary for all of us, just sitting there poking holes into our daughter. Thanks for the post. Hi Jamie! Never a need for apologies sweetie. YES, the blue rubber went in, but obviously just the tip bent though and some reason still was pumping. Couldn't figure out why it was blue underneath. Did I ever feel dumb. I really like the ones I use. May I ask how old Julie is? I really love my "clip on" like I said, but at night I put it in the original and clip it on to the back of my jammers. Once they mistakenly sent me the huge ones, and I don't like them at all!! Best of luck with Julie. Have a good evening!
