Incline would most likely cause you to increase muscle and work the muscles (including your heart) more than no incline, but does it ("6.5 incline, 4 days") have a bigger payoff than the increased metabolism of the 7 days? I'm assuming that it also increases endorphins, but with less frequency than the "7 day" plan. Hey, Janis???? What's the answer to that question from a physiological angle?? Hi Mary and Richard, Physical activity helps improve blood sugar control for 48-72 hours. There is nothing wrong with concentrating your intense workout into 4 days, as long as you do some sort of activity on a few of the remaining days. You can walk around the neighborhood, dance, swim, do yoga, or even stretch. All movement is good. Janis __________________ Janis Roszler, RD, CDE, LD/N |

Hi Sharon, I've lost track of Paula. Is she OK, & maybe she is busy with the new grandbaby? __________________ The Longest Journey Begins With a Single Step. |

Hi Lou, yes, Paula is doing fine. Thanks for asking. They live with her and her husband. Carrie (baby's mom)had a C-section and I think it was the end of last week Carrie ended up in the hospital with an infection but is home again. And a few days ago the baby was fussy most of the day. Babies get that way you know. So Paula helps out as much as she can and gets very tired. That's why she isn't posting much right now - or emailing either. It is just one of those things. She'll be back when she feels she can. She sends her love. Read you later - LUM FUN AND LAUGHTER - Sharon __________________ Sharon from Arizona |

Reply with quote | #80 | Hi everyone! Thanks for the answer Janis.
Gosh, I had a low before lunch yesterday, and after I ate, had a really bad headache and lack of energy...sleepiness the rest of the day. The same thing has happened today. I ate, and my blood sugar bounced back to good levels, but now I'm really sleepy with a very bad headache....I just want to curl up in a ball and sleep for a week.
Can't though...Our daughter, son-in-law, and 9 year old granddaughter will be arriving in about 2-3 hours. They are bringing the ingredients and will be cooking dinner, which is a relief. We're keeping our granddaughter for the weekend, which should be fun, but means that I probably won't check in on the computer until Monday morning. Rest assured that I'll be on that treadmill each day, though.
Today's stats:
Total steps yesterday: 6712
Treadmill today: 30 minutes at 2.7 mph no incline
Have a great weekend everyone!

Be careful, Mary! I remember one day last year when I had a low, took care of it and had some after effects like those you mentioned. Since my BSL was back to a normal level I thought it was safe to exercise. I did the same exercise I am doing now on my treadmill and I was much more tired than usual whe I finished. I didn't think much about it but when I tested my BSL was in the high 40's. I have good control at that level so I was okay but if it had dropped into the 30's I would probably have collapsed on the treadmill. That could be so very dangerous. Take care! What would I do without my treadmill partner??? Richard, |

Hi Mary,
Enjoy the little one. Kids can be exhausting, so don't be surprised if you find yourself going to bed before the sun goes down! Take care of yourself.

Reply with quote | #84 | HI Gang!
Thanks for your concern, Richard! I do my treadmill about 5:45 AM, and the lows happened around lunch time. After resting and getting some sleep I was good as new. You can't get rid of me that easily! You're "stuck" with me for a walking partner.
You sure are right, Janis! We went to bed early both nights that Cassie was here, and last night we were so tired after we got home from taking her back to her home, that we didn't even want to get out of our chairs to go to bed. We sure love the visits, though!
My stats for the last couple of days have been:
Total Steps Walked for:
Friday: 7682
Saturday: 5952
Sunday: 5850
Treadmill for those same days:
30 minutes at 2.7 mph no incline
Treadmill for today:
30 minutes at 2.8 mph no incline!

Thanks for the happy dance!!! I love happy dancing!! I'd be happy to dedicate this morning's walking to you, but if I do, then I get the benefits and you don't get anything but the credit. That's the short end of the stick, my friend, and I love you too much to do that for you/to you more than once... Come on...let's party together and do the walking simultaneously....you in the east can start (you're ahead of us time-wise) and like in a relay, I'll grab the "torch" when I get up in the mornings. What do you think???
Today's info:
Total steps yesterday: 5640
Today's treadmill: 30 minutes at 2.8 no incline
Hey Richard.....is that you over there with a "torch"???? __________________ CLINK - CLINK - CLANK - CLANK!!!

"Mary, Mary quite contrary, how does your garden grow?.............". A quote from an old nursery rime. I cannot imagine you ever being contrary, Mary. You are always so cheerful and upbeat! Yes, you ARE magnificent, as suggested in your closing on your posts! I had a high yesterday afternoon so I did my usual exercise even though that made two days in a row. More hip pain last night though. I should have taken some fast acting insulin instead. I am feeling good today! I won't do the heavy exercise again until tomorrow. Richard |

Mary, You are awesome! Keep on truckin'! Richard, Why not try a different type of exercise to give your hips a rest? Here are a few suggestions: -Gentle weight training is great as long as you learn how to do it correctly. -If you are near a pool, you could walk in the pool - it would take lots of pressure off of your joints. -Yoga! Join a class or try a beginner yoga tape. I hate to think of you in pain! OUCH! Janis Roszler, RD, CDE, LD/N __________________ Janis Roszler, RD, CDE, LD/N |

Richard
With silver bells and cockle shells, and one doggone petunia!! I suppose that I have my moments of contrariness like anyone else, though most times people are commenting on my always seeming to be smiling. God gives us many things in our lives to be joyful about, and we must decide that we're going to look at the glass as half full instead of half empty. If we keep our eyes and hearts focused on the blessings we can be joyful much of the time. Look at all of the things that we have in our lives to be joyful about...family, friends, a roof over our heads, food when we're hungry, a disease that forces us to do things that are good for us, and each other to understand how difficult that process is to do...and to encourage each other through. When I'm weak, you're strong...and vice versa. Thank you SO much for your wonderful, loving comments, my new friend! When I feel discouraged I will think of you and be stronger for it, pushing myself forward to be magnificent. <<<Hug>>>>
I'm proud of you, Richard for your tenacity and perseverance!! You aren't giving up when you find the pain, using it for an excuse to retreat to old behaviors. THAT is magnificent in my book!! It's far too easy to succumb to the old, bad behaviors, and you have struck a trail to find a way around one of the obstacles. That is SO great!!!
When I woke up this morning, I had a lot of pain in my left hip. I must have slept on it longer last night, than the other hip. So I took 2 Advil and finished my cup of coffee before climbing on the treadmill. I really wanted to stop after about 10 minutes this morning, but refused to give up and quit early. The Advil took care of my pain, but I was just weary and my legs tired (my legs never usually feel tired!). I pushed through that and finished my 30 minutes at 2.8 mph.
When I got off the treadmill, I looked at the pair of hand weights and realized that if I continue to plan to do those or the Tae Chi after lunch or in the evenings, I will never get to them! So I did 15 each of 5 different exercises for the upper body with the weights, then went out to the livingroom (didn't want to lose my place on the dvd in the bedroom with the treadmill) and did 15 minutes of the Tae Chi video.
Usually after exercising, I go do emails and drink water to cool down. Then I fix myself breakfast a couple of hours later. Today I went right into the kitchen and prepared my breakfast right away because of the extra exercise. I feel great!! The hip isn't bothering me, and although I have a slight headache, I have lots of energy. I will take my bs reading in about half an hour or so before I have a mid-morning snack. I've been skipping the snack lately because I've eaten breakfast around 9-10, but have been hitting lows like 50 (yesterday at 1:30 pm because I delayed lunch too long!!) or 60 something. So am going to work on trying to keep that on a more even keel.
Total steps walked yesterday: 6633
I spent a couple of hours moving a table and some heavy stuff around yesterday in my quilting studio, and doing some purging and re-organizing in the house. Today, after I finish on the discussions, I am going to plan the dinner menu for the rest of the month to make a shopping list for tomorrow, when I head to the fruit & veggie store near my house (before I go to the grocery store so I won't be so tempted by the processed foods). Since I'll be running a lot of errands on Thursdays now, I may not check in until later in the day....will have to see how it shapes up. __________________ CLINK - CLINK - CLANK - CLANK!!!
