Rascally Richard
Richard, that was really disgusting! But a great idea! You are indeed a genius!! About the bouncer....to quote Ron White...."I don't know how many bouncers it takes to throw me out, but I know how many they're going to use!" As for me, if I want pizza, I just order the smallest one and do a LOT more steps!! And unlike what I tell one of my granddaughters....I fill up on liquid before and during the meal....diet Coke! That way I don't eat as much.
Now back to walking, 'cuz I see someone who looks like a bouncer headed this way!!! lol
Bobby, I am impressed!!! You REALLY walk fast!!! How'd you get to the point that you can do that?? As for doing the exercise in the last part of the day....I wouldn't ever do it then. I need to do it in the mornings before I do anything else. If I have to be somewhere early, I just get up a bit earlier so that I can do my walking before I go. I think everyone just has to find what works for them. If your schedule changes dramatically, like yours did, then you just have to re-evaluate and decide on prioritizing and scheduling those things you want to keep.
Today's info:
Yesterday's total steps: 6634
Today's treadmill: 30 minutes at 2.6 mph no incline

Can't go for a walk outside.( which I haven't been doing anyway ) There is 3ft.+ of snow out there and still coming down. All of Berrien county in SW MI is closed. No school everywhere, and I am not about to venture out! Anyway I am still trying to walk around inside with my trust pedometer on my hip. So far 343 steps. Not very good. But the day is not over and I will keep walking. Catch you all later. Bye To All Terry Lee |

Reply with quote | #50 | Good job to get out there Sharon! I hope your hip is feeling better now.
Terry Lee...it's been decades since I lived in snow, but wouldn't that be perfect weather to do something like snowshoeing or sledding or cross-country skiing or something??? I haven't been sledding since I was 11, which was centuries ago! And I've never done any of the other things, but they sound like wonderful fun to me.
Stats for today:
Total steps yesterday: 6451 (am sitting down, working on making those two baby quilts right now)
Today's treadmill: 30 minutes at 2.6 mph no incline....started watching "The Last Starfighter" this morning. Couldn't find anything I wanted to watch particularly.

Reply with quote | #52 | Oops! It's been a busy day, so I didn't get on this morning to post! My hubby works from home on Thursdays, which means that I get to sleep until 5:30 am instead of 5, and I get more interruptions during my day. I love the interruptions, though.
My stats for today:
Yesterday's total steps: 6409 (I've now finished piecing 20 blocks for the 2 baby quilts, with another 20 blocks to piece yet before I can start assembling the tops.)
Today's treadmill: 30 minutes at 2.6 mph with no incline. I started watching "The Last Starfighter" yesterday, but decided this morning that I REALLY wasn't in the mood, so I watched "For Richer or Poorer". It's one of my all-time favorites!

Mary you are probably in much better physical shape than I am. I have to hold tight to the treadmill handles. I don't have a very good sense of balance on that there contraption. Do you hold those handlebars too? If you don't then your whole body is exercising. I am exercising my body from the hips down but my upper body is almost motionless. That makes my seemingly rigorous exercise not so harsh as you might have thought. My heartbeats per minute still reaches about 150 now. Good for the heart! Richard |

Hi All I haven't been on for a couple of days. I have been busy tallying up GS Cookies sold and counting money and trying to get it all deposited in the bank and then figure out much the troop owes council and how much the troop gets to keep and now how do the girls want to use it!! I didn't know when I volunteered for a Girl Scout Leader I that I would also be bookkeeper and financial adviser too! But I Love it! So any way I have been getting too much walking done. Today is a new day and I can start again! Mary I don't know about the snow shoes, I have never tried them. Yes sledding and cross country skiing might be fun , I have never done the skiing but when I was younger I did a lot of sledding. But I am getting too old for that now and my health wouldn't allow me to. I know, I know I am a Girl Scout Leader. We do have some younger volunteers that could help there if the girls wanted to do some out door snow activities. I could have the hot chocolate waiting for them and help them warm up! that I would relay enjoy! To All Terry Lee |

I had to laugh at myself when I read your post and thought about it a second! Since I don't know what shape you are in, I don't know, though I CAN tell you that 5 months ago I was a basket case and was physically challenged by just being awake a majority of the day. I couldn't do the simplest things.....literally...without going through total exhaustion setting in.
This morning, after looking at my log books (I keep my bs readings and exercise and food logs in a book designed for just that, which I found at my local drugstore.) I realized that as of today I have completed walking for a total of 20 weeks so far!!!! That's 5 months!!! I didn't think that I'd last 5 minutes or 5 days doing this when I started!!
Why was I laughing when I read your post??? You said that you have to hold on tight to the handles because of your sense of balance. When I started walking, I had a "death grip" on the metal handles up front, just below the read-outs. I didn't dare let go even for a second because I would have come crashing down or off the back of that thing!! My sense of balance is horrible, and always has been, as I've had a problem with the middle ear in my right ear for years.
Over the last 5 months I have increased time and now speed, and never even noticed until now that I lightly lay my hands gently on the side "handles", or drape my hands up to my wrists on the metal handles under the controls, and some of the time each day I have even let go and walked without hanging on at all!!! When I end up half-way back on the tread instead of close to the front, I place my hands back on the side arms. So I guess I've progressed my than I thought!! (Since I'm not gripping the metal hand-holds any more, I don't know my pulse.)
Today's stats:
Total steps yesterday: 6100 (spent the day quilting)
Today's treadmiall: 30 minutes at 2.6 mph with no incline....I didn't go in to walk until around 7:15 or so, as my bs when I woke up was 67! So I ate and waited awhile until it was 130 to begin. I was really freaked out about starting so late, as I didn't want to have time to talk myself out of it! But on the other hand, 67 was too low even for NOT exercising, and I know not to even try until it's over 90!
Terry Lee....I've never tried anything like that except for sledding as a small child. I loved that, but can't get down that low (unless I fall!) any more. I'm hoping that as I get more fit and lose more weight, that I'll reclaim that ability as well. But snowshoeing is something that I think I'd personally try if I lived in a snowy climate and could either rent or borrow some from someone who could show me how to use them...and I had a safe place to do so, with someone around to help me if I fell and couldn't get up. Serving hot cocoa is about my speed still...though I yearn to go play in the snow again!

Thanks Mary, from now on I won't feel guilty while holding the side bars. I was so busy at other things early this week that I didn't start treadmilling until Wed. On both Wed. and Thurs. I did 1 mile in 21.25 min. That's roughly 2.8 mph with incline = 6.5. I might have to slow down though. My hips have been hurting in the area of the protruding hip bones. It hurts to lie on my side after a few hours in bed at night. When I stopped the treadmill for three days recently the pain disappeared. I hope I am not doing myself any permanent damage if I continue my exercise as described above. Richard |

Nothing to feel guilty about, Richard! You are exercising regularly, and that's a plus in my book. Holding onto to the side bars just makes it so that we don't become injured enough to have to quit! It'll come with time, I'm sure.
I'm proud of you, Richard, for making sure that you did it on Wednesday and Thursday. But I want to challenge you to look at your schedule realistically, and find time to work it into the schedule as a priority...."Richard Time". If you are like me, scheduling "Mary Time" was at the bottom of my list because everyone else's need was more important than mine. And if I felt guilty enough, or had any energy left, THEN I put "Mary Time" in there. You seem as determined as I am to do this, and if you are, then giving it the priority that you would if someone called you to set up a business meeting or event is not out of line. You are worth it, my new friend.
Your comments about the pain in your hips, especially when laying in bed, really rang home with me. I've had lower back pain off and on, for weeks at a time, in addition to the pain in my hips/posterior where my leg joins the trunk of my body. I've had some sleepless nights due to the pain, as no position was comfy and moving was just like someone was jabbing my lower back with a sharp knife. There were times when I would walk across a room, that my body involuntarily would start to bend forward to crumple from the pain before I could move forward. I sincerely believe that something is out in my lower back, and that it probably is from the excess weight that I carry in the abdominal area. (I'm a side sleeper.) I've even felt, and heard, it go into place a few times.
I'm goofy enough to have just said a little prayer that I could manage to get through the treadmill session the next morning. Then in the morning before getting onto the treadmill, I take a couple of Advil. It allows me to get through it on those days, as the longer I walk on the treadmill, the easier it becomes.
One of the things that I've noticed over the last few years (waaaaay before I started exercising) is that on the days that I walk the most steps is the time that my hip and leg hurt. I suspect that is from use and that perhaps I'm walking with an uneven gait. I may be favoring one side over another without realizing it, as I walk. My right leg and hip were really aching last night, and my total of steps yesterday was 8738 because not only had I walked my 30 minutes at 2.6 mph, but I spent about 2 1/2 hours walking around Target followed by another 60-90 minutes walking through the grocery store, then lugging the groceries into the house and to put them away. I'd been averaging 5500-7000 per day this week because I've been sitting down working on making a couple of baby quilts. Common sense tells me it's use....and that same common sense says that since it's only one leg, it means that I'm favoring one leg over another when I walk.
I'm not sure what to suggest, but wanted to let you know that you aren't alone in this. As for me...if it prevents me from doing my daily treadmill stint one morning, then I will call my doctor. As long as the Advil works and I can still do my routine, I'm going to work on losing more weight to see if it doesn't resolve the problem. The 63 lbs I've lost so far has resolved many things for me, and I'm anxious to see what else gets better as I lose more. Whatever problems are left or are insurmountable or too critical, I bring to my doctor. Right now I'm just going to keep the Advil handy and keep moving forward because it's still working for me. I hope that helps.
Sharon, I'm really excited to see that you were out there again!!! That's two days in a row, and I'm very proud of you! Great going! Thanks for the thumbs up! I know that you can do it too.... It's supposed to be lovely out today. Are you going to take Buddy out for another walk???
My stats for the day:
Total steps yesterday: 8738
Treadmill today: 30 minutes at 2.6 mph no incline
