And there's always the mall or your local Wal-Mart. I used to go to Wal-Mart because it's closer, though it's harder to find a parking space.
Good morning gang!!
Total steps yesterday: 6091
Today on treadmill: 30 minutes at 2.5 mph no incline (Watching Chicago...not sure that I like it, so I may switch to something else tomorrow.)
Got to run, as I'm working on making a couple of baby quilts...one of which is for the new granddaughter (Yep! It's going to be a girl!!!!) that we're having in June.

Mary! Oh I do agree, mall walking is a fad and if you have easy access to one and don't mind driving with the gas situation...go for it! Still going up and down stairs and working on project that I going from living room to kitchen/back and forth! Hello Mary! Sounds like you are doing well. Great! I am thinking about lowering my incline to zero on my treadmill and walking a full 30 minutes like you. It would be much less taxing that way and I would have the energy for more than my usual mile. My heart beats at 140 per minute when I walk with the incline at 6.5 for 1 mile. My Dr. says okay as long as I do not have chest pain but I am 67 now and I am thinking that your kind of exercising, for a longer period of time, is better for me. Any comments? Thanks for your input! I haven't been doing so good lately. Not feeling very good. My head feels funny, not dizzy, just funny and I don't want to be too far from home. Buddy and I did go for a little walk this afternoon, so I guess that is better than nothing. LUM FUN AND LAUGHTER - Sharon __________________ Sharon from Arizona |

Hi Sharon! Twice in recent years I experienced dizziness. Both times I found that it was medication I was using. Th prinrouts supplied by my pharmacy listed dizziness as a symptom for both medications. I had been taking those medications when I got up in the morning and I got dizzy just one or two hours later. I started taking both of those medications just before bedtime. I no longer had the problem! Of course dizziness could also be due to low blood sugar and to high blood pressure. I once had extreme dizziness due to low hemoglobin. I took iron tablets for about two years to build up my hemoglobin count. Shortly after starting the iron tabs the dizziness disappeared. You should not take iron tablets as an experiment. An overdose of iron can produce very unpleasant side effects. Richard |

Thanks Janis and Richard. I do have high bp and will definately talk to my dr. about this. I was very sleepy this morning and now, at 1:30 in the afternoon I feel much better. Don't know what this is all about. In the last couple of days I did have to drive by myself down to the airpport to get Larry's brother. Larry drove 1 car and I followed him to give 1 car to his brother. Then Larry drove back with me. Then Tues. night I had to get Ron back to the airport. He drove and I drove home by myself. I did have Buddy with me. I was really nervous about that. I don't like driving down there. But I have had this sleepiness before that. Like I said I will talk to my dr. about it. I DID IT! Just came back from a 10 min. walk! It is only 11 with the real feel at 0. I had my windbreaker on and felt good. Face is a little cold now, but had my "ear grips" on! Heart was racing a few mins. ago, but doing fine. I knew I could do it! 7:38p. I went by myself too! HAPPY DANCE! Have a good evening all! Hello walking buddies! Nice going Mary! I walked 30 minutes yesterday with an incline of only 3%. My speed was 3mph. But my BSL dropped only 5 points. Today I raised the incline back to 6.5%. I walked 1mi. in 21.5 min. The speed was 2.8mph. I cannot go 30 min. at that speed with that incline level. But that dropped my BSL almost 40 pts. Richard |

Hi Richard! You should probably talk to your doctor and ask him about which is better for you. I was TOTALLY sedentary and am very overweight, so my doctor started me on doing 7 days a week for 15 minutes and moving up in 1 minute increments (0 incline, and a comfy speed for me at the time, which was 2.1 mph) to 30. That not only helped me to establish the habit, but gave me the endurance to do it without overwhelming me.
Then she moved me to increase my speed .1 mph at a time, which is what I'm working on doing now. On Monday I will change from 2.5 to 2.6, and in a few weeks will be at 3.0 mph. I believe that she did this to help increase the amount of work that my muscles are doing (including my heart) slowly enough not to shock my body or overwhelm me.
Finally, she has asked me to start changing the incline, which is at 0 currently, as soon as I've achieved the 3.0 for a week or two. It's my belief that the incline is where I'm finally going from "trainee" if you will, to serious walking and use of my muscles. It's going to work my muscles, including my heart, much harder each time, remembering that my stamina/duration will not diminsh nor will my speed. Doing the incline in the .5% increments (which is the smallest increment my treadmill does) will assist me in accomplishing this after having done all of the prep work over the past few months to train my mind, spirit and body.
I can only speak for myself in saying that I think that I needed to do it this way to be able to go the long haul physically and to be able to do the work that the incline will add. It makes more commonsense to me to start with the basics of something and work my way up to be a real "pro" at it. Most days I enjoy my movie and my exercise, which is an idea that horrified me at the outset. I couldn't have even imagined myself doing what I'm doing now....or having achieved the benefits of what I've achieved either!
Why I suggest that you discuss this option with your doctor is that medically, there may be an overriding reason that he put you on the program that you are on currently. But if he doesn't care, as long as you are exercising and doing it not only frequently but consistently, then I think that this approach could work for you too. Ultimately we are responsible for our own health and the decisions that we make regarding our bodies. My doctor and I work as a team, and that is a very important factor in my having achieved what I have in this area. I hope that this helps.... __________________ CLINK - CLINK - CLANK - CLANK!!!
