hi everyone, this is my first post on this site, so hello!  I am a type 2 diabetic, 38 years old and will be starting my first IVF cycle in February.  (IVF = invitro fertilization)  Has anyone on this site ever done IVF while being treated for their diabetes?  Right now I am currently taking 10 mcg of Byetta x 2 times a day as well as 1000mg of metformin. We may end up dropping the Byetta if I do become pregnant as it is a class C drug therefore the effects on a fetus are not well known.  If anyone has any suggestions or advice, on the IVF process as well as being pregnant and diabetic, I would greatly appreciate it!!!  I have an appt w/ my primary care doctor tomorrow to discuss being put on Lantus and after reading some of the other posts on this site, I may look into combining my Byetta w/ the Lantus until we start our cycle..  (although I look forward to dropping the Byetta, it makes me sick sick sick)
Thanks in advance!
Janis

Hi hrhkelly,
Welcome to the dearjanis.com family!  I know of several women who successfully became pregnant using IVF.  I wish you lots of success.   I have lots to suggest after you become pregnant, but that can wait.  First, concentrate on the present and do your best to keep your blood sugar level in a healthy range.

Welcome again,
Janis

wonderful!  thank you!  any suggestions or advice you can give will be so appreciated.  I am very concerned about after we do become pregnant keeping my sugars well controlled.  I don't want a 12 pound baby!!!!

Wow...we share almost the exact story...I will be 38 in March..have type 2 diabetes and PCOS. I start my stim meds today for my IVF...my egg retrieval will be the middle of January. I am hoping we can be cycle buddies and support one another since we are so similar

i would love that!  I'm still trying to get my A1c down before I can start.  They put me on Lantus as well as my Byetta so hopefully we'll be able to start in maybe Feb or March.
Do you have any kids now?  I have 3 from a previous marriage, and now am starting over.  eek!

What is your AC1...mine is 5.8. I'm on a ton of meds though. I'm on 2000 mg of metformin, 15 mg actos (which helps with ovulation), NPH insulin at bedtime, victoza which is similar to byetta but with less stomach side affects....I lost a ton of weight on byetta but my sugars were awful. I also am on a sliding scale for insulin which I hardly use because my sugars are so good . I test 5x a day. My RE also has me on baby aspirin 81 mg, 4 mg folic acid and prenatal vitamins...I feel like a pharmacy...I haven't even included my fertility meds

My last A1c was 8.2....  i fell HARD off the wagon and stopped taking my meds.  I'm new-ish to diabetes and just let it go.  then we decided to get preggers and back on the wagon I went..  by the time I had my tubal reversal surgery, my a1c was down to 6 and it needs to be there for my fertility doc to start our first cycle.  I'm on Byetta and HATE it, it makes me so sick.. she just added Lantus since I told her I won't take the Byetta durning pregnancy since it's a class C drug.  and I'm on metformin as well.  And I got a glimpse of the meds list at our first IVF consult.  holy cow!!!  luckily I'm handy w/ the needles!  I was telling my doc I lead a very needle centric life since I also go to acupuncture and have a lot of tattoo's as well.  As you're a little further ahead of the game than I am, I would love to be able to offer you support and be a cheerleader for you!!!  I'd love some advice on the meds and vitamins...  it gets confusing..
