Yea!!! You got it!!!! You are now in the club!!!!!

Thanks for that bit of info about Mardi Gras! My future son-in-law and I were discussing it last night, and he told me that. To imagine, that I'd heard of it and didn't know it! Well, of course, the biggest part is that I don't understand or speak FRENCH!!! Ah well.........

Janis! Must be busy,  haven't seen you here lately. Please grab a cup of coffee or some hot tea....... Question....the RD I was seeing doesn't know anything about insulin.  No, didn't speak to her personally, but questioned the other RD when I called (obviously the one I saw was gone for a four day weekend), and said they don't, and nicely said I should call my Endo.  We talked awhile and she explained why the Endo should inform me and thanked her for her time. He takes for granted that I should know things. Was told to take 1:8 per 30 carbs and 1:10 per carbs when numbers are high and add 3 units. High?  Hello......numbers please!  I know the guide line numbers, but I needed a high number to work with.  Yes, I make a list when I see any of my doctors or him, and I really can't explain him to be honest.  DIDN'T tell me the numbers.  I never knew what/were a base number was, or still how high is too high!  Sharon explained all to me, as you may have read.  Sharon said 110 for example for my base number.  I have been using that for two weeks.  With that said, sorry so long....many RD's don't bother with insulin knowledge?  I say that respectfully.  I see my PC Thursday and boy do have a questions and comments for her.  After rereading this post, I did ask him what is to high, and he just said: "When high increase your insulin? "   HELLO! You in there doc?   Thanks for your time.  Have a good evening.  Plan on moving back to Michigan?  Please, please, please, please!  CLINK!  Paula

Hi Paula,

I've been putting the finishing touches on my second book. I should have more time to visit now that it is almost finished. Sorry!

There are many different types of dietitians - some who offer general nutrition and dieting advice and others who specialize in specific medical conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, and kidney disease.  If you want to speak with a dietitian who understands insulin, find one who specializes in diabetes, preferably one who is a CDE (certified diabetes educator).  I'm not familiar with the nutrition needs of a person who is on chemotherapy treatment for cancer and a dietitian who specializes in cancer will probably know very little about the new insulins. Just like doctors, we specialize too.

Janis!  Correct me if I miss listened.  Did the "pump" lady say she was pumping 110 a day?  I noticed late December, the "diabetic belly" was beginning to take effect.  Obviously didn't know there was such a thing until Clee mentioned it.  With that said, could it be due to the insulin that we are injecting?  Obviously I know insulin does have an effect with weight gain. Knowing the insulin ratio, many times I have needed to inject more than normal due to high numbers, that was when Sharon  explained to me how it works and how one must watch their intake of carbs, and not to inject because you want more of a certain dish/item to compensate. Thanks!  Have a good day!  CLINK! - Paula

  Hi Paula,

The above is a great question. I hope my tummy will go down with the aid of exercise and diet......On Novolin, I have not been as hungry as I was on Latus.  Plus I THINK gained weight with the Lantus.  Maybey it was my imagination.

Clee!  How you feeling.......taking your meds young lady?    Thanks. Wasn't sure if that was a no brainer question. My doctor told me point blank that insulin does have a contributing factor to weight gain.  Man, I can't think of the one I was on before I saw the Endo and he took me off of it.  Hum, is the Novalin a pen?  If so, how high up can you dial up?  I take the bottle....of Lantus thank you , and I take 92 units at night time only, unless number is high, it is 100 units.  Read you later.  Have to make bread, from the bread machine that is, SO many requests here.   I like to make the cinnamon bread, because it is SO delicious making french toast with it. I know, I do watch it. Have a great day!  CLINK! - Paula

Paula,

I use the bottle of Novolin.  No pen.  I wonder if ALL insulins cause weight gain?  Like I said, with Lantus I gained weight.  I'll see what happens with the Novolin as I have been on it since Feb. 24.  As I said, I haven't been as hungry and I'm drinking more water now.  That seems to help me a lot.  You also said that you increased your units depending on how high your BS is.  Is that possible with many insulins?  What are some of the things you have to look for when increasing the units on your own?

Clee
