I am trying to lose weight i need to lose at least 40 pounds. I am currently drinking the glucerna weight loss shakes. i read in one of my diabetes magazines that slim fast optima was safe for type 2 diabetics to drink. They are also 3 dollars cheaper and have 2 more shakes. SHould i keep drinking glucerna or would it be safe for me to switch to slim fast.

Is it safe for me to drink grapefruit juice?? i have always used that to help lose  weight. But i am not sure if it is safe for me to take with my meds. I take amaryl 1mg a day. and Metformin 2x a day?

Also, one more question, i can have a bedtime snack of 30 carbs, would it be ok if i ate a reeses peanut butter cup of 23 carbs??

I feel so much more confident in controlling my diabetes since i have found this website. YOur help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

April

Hi April,

I'm so pleased that you enjoy this website!   I checked out the SlimFast site. The dietitian on the site states that it can be used by people with type 2 diabetes.  Regarding your chocolate, I'm a bit woried about the rollercoaster affect that the simple sugars in the Reeses will have on your blood sugar while you sleep.  I'm concerned that it will cause a very quick rise in BS and then drop while you are sleeping.  If you wish to have your Reeses, it is probably better to have it earlier in the day and monitor the effect.  Something high fiber would be a better choice before bedtime.

A bit of grapfruit juice should be fine.  It doesn't burn calories, that is just a myth.  But 1/2 cup has about the same amount of carbs as a piece of fruit.  Enjoy!

Janis

April! My personal opinion about grapfruit juice?  I take blood pressure pills and was told years ago not to have grapefruit/juice because of the interaction with the pills.  CLINK - Paula  Have a great day!

I have an opinion between Sim Fast or Glucerna.  Slim Fast tastes like chalk to me...It's yucky and for me for some reason it makes my BS raise like crazy.

I just picked up chocolate Glucerna about a month ago and I'll tell you that I LOVE the taste.  No Chalk, doesn't have the aftertaste that Atkins shakes have either.  It's got the good carbs that slowly work through your system so my bloodsugars haven't gone haywire when I use it to supplement a meal.

I HIGHLY recommend Glucerna if your interested.  Usually you can find coupons at http://www.glucerna.com and they have these neat meal plans, exercise plans, and monitor your bg if you so desire.

Good Luck with the healthy eating!

Hi all, this isn't about Slimfast or Glucerna, but Enterex Diabetic shakes.  They sponser Janis's show and I have bought them.  Oh, I've also bought Gluceerna, but that can upset my stomach.  But the Enterex is fine.  And they do taste good.  My one question with this is, it is 30 carbs, so can this be used as a snack or a replacement meal?  I was thinking it would be good at night if I go too low, but not with 30 carbs.  So now I'm not sure when to use it.  I have taken it to church when Larry has to open early in the morning, before my breakfast time, because 30 carbs is usually what I have for breakfast.  But with his newe job, graveyard shift, he isn't opening church now.  So when is the best way for me to use these shakes.  Lunch meal replacement?

2 slices of bread @12 carbs each=24

                                                        plus 1 fruit @ 15 carbs

                                                   so total carbs=  39 carbs

Anyway, I was just wondering exactly where you would suggest to put the Enterex diabetic shake.

ps - thE above info ended up looking like an email address, sorry, IT IS NOT.

I've heard the same info about grapefruit juice and blood pressure pills, but most people don't drink enough to affect them, so I have never restricted it.

I've tried the strawberry Glucerna shakes, and thought they had a funny taste to them, though they are very filling. Do you just get used to their taste, or is the chocolate just a better flavor?

Hi Mary,

Enterex Diabetic shakes have a terrific taste, like real milk shakes.  I'm not familiar with the Glucerna flavors.

I'll have to look for them in the stores, as there are sometimes when I'm working on a quilt, that I don't want to stop to eat, though I'm hungry and I need food.

Thanks!

Hi Sharon,

Enterex can be used in place of a meal or as a snack.  It depends on how your day goes.  Each can contains about 240 calories, so it may not be the best choice for a snack if you want to lose weight.

Hi Janis,  Thanks regarding the grapfruit juice.  I loved to eat grapefruits and drink the juice.  I have a great shake from Weight Watchers that I used to make ALL the time.  CLINK - Paula

Would you please post the recipe on a recipe thread, Paula?  I don't like grapefruit juice that much, but do love the fruit.  But if the recipe sounds good, I might try it.  And if you do, I'll post a really good diabetic recipe for a cafe' mocha custard.

BTW Sharon....I tried using Netscape as a browser, and it has the ability to change the type style and colors!  I usually use Safari, which doesn't have that capability.
