Monday Nov 30 - My Participation In The Joslin Medalist Study

Anita and I will drive to Boston on Sunday, Nov 29, weather permitting. It is only a four hour trip for us. We hope to meet-up with some other diabetics who live in the boston area that evening and again Monday afternoon or evening. Four members have been in touch with me. It will be nice to meet them.

I am supposed to double my carb intake on Sat and Sun, but only for supper. Then we will be at Joslin at 7:15 AM Mon morning, after fasting over night. I will be given the glass of glucose drink at that point. This is called a "Mixed Meal Tolerance Test", somewhat different from the standard glucose tolerance test. There will be a thorough exam of my eyes, kidneys, heart and nervous system. My C-peptide will be part of the blood testing that will be done that day. I have filled out about 20 pages of forms and my doctor has prepared a list of my A1c's 1980-2009. You may have seen my recent thread showing that list.

All of this is being done at one of the premier diabetes centers in the world and it is all free. The JDRF is funding the study and all my testing, and the Lily company that makes so much of our insulin is paying my travel and lodging expenses.

The ultimate goal of this study is to try and determine why some Type 1 diabetics have lived so long and have no serious complications. All the participants have had Type 1 for 50 years or more. There have been almost 500 participants so far. The study will conclude in 2011 after 750 participants have been examined. Dr King, the head of the project, is hoping to find the cause of our doing so well for so long. If the cause can be found then a treatment may be developed that will enable younger Type 1's to follow the right path and avoid serious complications.

The results of my testing will be mailed to me about a week after we return home.

Is the pump right for me?

Hi, Gang!

Well, I had my appointment with the nurse practitioner that now alternates appointments with my endo. She thinks I would be a good candidate for the pump, but I'm always afraid of anything new or different, so I'm approaching this cautiously. I know that almost everyone on here that's a pumper loves it, and I'm sure that if I go that route, I will, too, but I'm wondering if anyone has any caveats or bad experiences, or anything at all to comment on, just so I've considered all sides to this.

I also have to check to see what my insurance would cover, as I can't financially handle any regimen that's more expensive than what I do now. Also, my endo has finally decided that I was a type 1.5, and am now a type 1, as I suspected all along.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any and all comments--I really appreciate it!

 Kim

Sixth Graders------Part 2

Below, are examples of sixth grade research projects. Enjoy...

9. Queen Elizabeth was the Virgin Queen. As a queen she was a success. When she exposed herself before her troops they all shouted hurrah.

10. It was an age of great inventions and discoveries. Gutenberg invented removable type and the Bible. Another important invention was the circulation of blood. Sir Walter Raleigh is a historical figure because he invented cigarettes and started smoking. Sir Francis Drake circumcised the world with a 100 foot clipper.

11. The greatest writer of the Renaissance was William Shakespeare. He was born in the year 1564, supposedly on his birthday. He never made much money and is famous only because of his plays. He wrote tragedies, comedies, and hysterectomies, all in Islamic pentameter. Romeo and Juliet is an example of a heroic couple. Romeo's last wish was to be laid by Juliet.

12. Writing at the same time as Shakespeare was Miguel Cervantes. He wrote Donkey Hote. The next great author was John Milton. Milton wrote Paradise Lost. Then his wife died and he wrote Paradise Regained.

13. Delegates from the original 13 states formed the Contented Congress. Thomas Jefferson, a Virgin, and Benjamin Franklin were two singers of the Declaration of Independence. Franklin discovered electricity by rubbing two cats backwards and declared, A horse divided against itself cannot stand. Franklin died in 1790 and is still dead.

14. Abraham Lincoln became America's greatest Precedent. Lincoln's mother died in infancy, and he was born in a log cabin which he built with his own hands. Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves by signing the Emasculation Proclamation. On the night of April 14, 1865, Lincoln went to the theater and got shot in his seat by one of the actors in a moving picture show. They believe the assinator was John Wilkes Booth, a supposingly insane actor. This ruined Booth's career.

15. Johann Bach wrote a great many musical compositions and had a large number of children. In between he practiced on an old spinster which he kept up in his attic. Bach died from 1750 to present. Bach was the most famous composer in the world and so was Handel. Handel was half German, half Italian and half English. He was very large.

16. Beethoven wrote music even though he was deaf. He was so deaf he wrote loud music. He took long walks in the forest even when everyone was calling for him. Beethoven expired in 1827 and later died for this.

17. The nineteenth century was a time of a great many thoughts and inventions. People stopped reproducing by hand and started reproducing by machine. The invention of the steamboat caused a network of rivers to spring up. Cyrus McCormick invented the McCormick raper, which did the work of a hundred men. Louis Pasteur discovered a cure for rabbis. Charles Darwin was a naturalist who wrote the Organ of the Species. Madman Curie discovered radio. And Karl Marx became one of the Marx Brothers.

I know that I sound like a broken record, but I have to get this under control and must use the Jump Start Pledge to do it. What are you all working on this week?

Post YOUR JSP now!!!!
Janis

Hi everyone!
My cpeptide test LOW 0.90! I think in 2007 it was 2.1. Normal is 1.1-4.4. I sure hope this is low enough for Medicare standards for my pump! Pray that I will be approved by medicare. Thank you all for all your support.

To All

Terry Lee

The Doctor Is In

The Doctor Is In...

Two doctors, a psychiatrist and a proctologist, opened an office in a small town and put up a sign reading: "Dr. Smith and Dr. Jones: Hysterias and Posteriors." The town council was not happy with the sign, so the doctors changed it to read, "Schizoids and Hemorrhoids."

This was not acceptable either, so in an effort to satisfy the council, they changed the sign to "Catatonics and High Colonics." No go.

Next, they tried "Manic Depressives and Anal Retentives." Thumbs down again.

Then came "Minds and Behinds." Still no good.

Another attempt resulted in "Lost Souls and Butt Holes." Unacceptable again!

So they tried "Analysis and Anal Cysts." Not a chance. "Nuts and Butts?" No way. "Freaks and Cheeks?" Still no go. "Loons and Moons?" Forget it.

Almost at their wit's end, the doctors finally came up with: "Dr. Smith and Dr. Jones, Odds and Ends."

Everyone loved it.
